Merle 002

A veteran inventor was going through some hard times. Too much on his mind lately after a sudden divorce. This forced him to lead a temporary secluded life. One day he decided that a short walk in the forest behind his residence would do him good. A bit of fresh air might chase the cobwebs from his brain. Following a quiet forest path, he passed a pool where frogs often treat passers-by with a lively concert during the spring. The pool was quiet. Too early in the season for frogs.

All of a sudden he thought he heard music in the far distance. Someone was singing and there seemed to be guitar accompaniment as well. The voice apparently came from a clearing in the forest, behind the pool with the frogs. Quite an unusual place for a singer. Curiosity overtook him and he headed for the clearing. It was a woman's voice, singing a few phrases. The voice would stop now and again, then it came back. It sounded as if the singer was trying to remember a song or practicing it.

When the inventor reached the clearing, the singing voice was loud and clear, but still no trace of the singer. A small group of trees barred his view. Whoever she was, the sound of her voice was quite interesting. Its rough edge reminded him of singers like Bonnie Tyler and the late Janis Joplin. She definitely sounded like an experienced singer.

The inventor came nearer and he saw a guitar case lying on the grass. The voice stopped again and he thought he heard the sound of a lighter. Apparently the singer was taking a break. He decided to step forward and saw a young woman looking at the horizon, a cigarette in her hand and a guitar lying next to her.
